Ask A Writer

OK, I haven't done one of these in awhile. I'm opening up the floor!! This is a chance for anyone to ask me anything about anything. Well, almost anything :). It could be about the process and craft of writing, about being published, about the industry in general. It could be about my books or current projects I'm working on. I'm getting ready to head to NY for the annual RWA conference, so it could be something related to conferences or other writer events. Ready? GO!!

  1. What's the one genre or subgenre you wish you could write but don't feel you can? I wish I could write a spy thriller, but don't feel I have the knowledge. And I love good historical romances that seem so real, and wish I could write those, too.

  2. Hey, Cara! Mmm, I've thought a lot about the sub-genres I'd like to write in. Eventually. I read across a lot of them, paranormal in particular. I really believe a good story is a good story, regardless of it's setting or time period. I actually have a couple of paranormal series ideas drafted. Something that's not vampire or shifter! While I love to read a good historical romance, I don't think my voice is suited to that style. It would probably be too much work for me so I doubt I'll ever write an historical. Well, except maybe a Western ;). I love a good Western!

  3. What's next up for you? Do you have a plan for any series in the near future?

  4. So you get an idea for an awesome book...How do you get that idea out of your head and on to the paper?

  5. I'll ask you the ones I get most lol. 1) When's your next book coming out? 2) Are you ever going to write (insert name's) story? 3) Is the sex in your books based on your real-life experiences? 4) Why don't you put books out faster? Shouldn't you be chained to your keyboard????

  6. Hi Kaily,

I've been meaning to ask you this for a while :)and gathered the courage to do so now ;)

Will you please (pretty please) be a guest author at my blog?

  7. Hey, KJ, thanks for popping over! I've given a lot of thought to series. In fact, I kind of left it open in both PAY UP and PLAY ME for them to have at least one follow-on book and I have an outline for each of them. There's the potential that there could be additional books from that as well. It does seem to me that an author can really leverage a series to build readership, so I'll be heading in that direction for sure!

Hi, Beth! You know, a lot of people say to me "I've got a great idea for a story...". That's great, but there's a heck of a lot more to writing a book than coming up with the idea. For me, the idea is the incredibly easy part. Sometimes it comes fully formed with a full blown plot and clear characters, other times the rest has to be built around a seed of a concept. Getting the idea to reflect on the paper exactly how you see it in your head? That's the challenge every day :)!

Jaid, thanks for stopping by! LOL. Let's see... 1) Don't know but I have a book due to my editor next week 2) Cole? Zack? LOL. YES!! 3) *snort* I wish ;) 4) I'm trying!! I love to write. I live to write. I just have to learn how to streamline my process to do it FASTER!

Ju, honey, of COURSE I'll guest on your blog. LOL. Email me!

  8. How do you keep on task and maintain a schedule?

  9. Hey, Dreama! Honestly, that's probably the most challenging aspect to writing for me. Not so much maintaining a work schedule, but carving out dedicated, quiet, constructive time to create. It's easy to take care of all the little admin tasks that pop up from time to time, but the meat of crafting a story? It's tough. It helps to set aside the same time every day for writing. It helps to be realistic about what you can accomplish so you don't feel like a failure if you don't meet a goal. It helps to get real and kick your own butt when you need to. Whatever the long term goal with writing (finish a book, submit something, get publisihed, meet a specific publishing milestone), you have to keep asking yourself - How bad do I want it? Ultimately, only YOU can make it happen. And don't forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small, along the way!!

  10. Hi
How many rejections did you get when you started writing?

  11. Suzzana, thanks for stopping by! To date I've only had 1 rejection, but as I continue to write and try new story concepts, genres and lengths, I'll expect more. I think it's just a part of writing and getting better. I've heard MANY published authors talk about having books or proposals rejected. Unfortunately, it doesn't get eliminated when you become published, but with each one you can be certain there's a lesson to be learned!!
